El ātman (en sánscrito: आत्म‍, ātma; en idioma palí: atta) literalmente significa "sí mismo", pero a veces se traduce como "alma", siendo Ahamkara el ego. En el budismo, ātman es la consecuencia primordial de la sabiduría y de la autoconciencia del ser. Constituye el atributo más elevado en la constitución septenaria del hombre. Algunos sutras mahāyānas y tántricos, sin embargo, insisten fuertemente sobre la realidad final del ātman cuando es equiparado con el ser esencial y eterno del buda (Doctrina Tathagatagarbha).

Ātman, attā or attan in Buddhism refers to the concept of self, and is found in Buddhist literature's discussion of the concept of non-self (Anatta). Although the Buddha argued that no permanent, unchanging "self" can be found, some Buddhist schools, sutras and tantras present the notion of an atman (/ˈɑːtmən/) or permanent "Self", although mostly referring to an Absolute and not to a personal self.
