Browsing without an account

You can search the dictionary, look up kanji, and use the practice tools without signing in. To remember your interface choices — display language and dictionary order — we store an encrypted preferences cookie in your browser. It holds only those settings and is never used for tracking or advertising.

What we collect when you sign in

Shirabe uses passwordless sign-in — a one-time email link or Google sign-in. When you create an account we store:

  • Your email address — to send sign-in links and account notices.
  • Your display name — what we call you in the app. You can change it any time.
  • Your birth date — optional, only if you add it to your profile.
  • Google account details — if you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email, and a provider identifier. We never see your Google password.
  • Session records — for each active sign-in we keep your IP address and browser user-agent, so you can review and revoke sessions and we can guard against abuse.
  • Your study data — saved words, decks, review history, notes, and achievements. This stays private to your account unless you join a classroom that shares it with a teacher.
  • API keys — if you generate one for the public API.

How we use your data

  • To provide the dictionary and spaced-repetition study features.
  • To authenticate you and keep your account secure.
  • To sync your preferences and study progress across devices.
  • To understand aggregate usage and fix problems.

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.

Service providers

A few trusted providers process data on our behalf so the app can run — hosting and database infrastructure, email delivery for sign-in links, and Google for optional OAuth sign-in. They may only use the data to provide their service to us.

Data retention

We keep your account data for as long as your account exists. You can delete your account at any time from your account settings; doing so permanently removes your profile, study data, notes, and sessions. Backups are rotated on a rolling basis and purge deleted data over time.

Your rights

You can access, correct, export, or delete your data from your account settings. If you'd like help exercising any of these rights, contact us at the address below. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA.

Children

Shirabe is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age of digital consent in your country). If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact us and we'll remove it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the product evolves. When we make material changes we'll update the date above and, where appropriate, let you know in the app.
