La anexión es un proceso, generalmente violento, por el cual un Estado o país se apodera de otro, destruyendo, trasladando o integrando todas o parte de sus instituciones, especialmente las Fuerzas Armadas que puedan tener y sus órganos de política internacional (embajadas, consulados, representaciones ante instituciones internacionales). Pese a que las anexiones no suelen ser deseadas por la clase dirigente del país anexionado, generalmente pierden todo o parte de su poder, sí pueden ser deseadas por la mayoría de la población. Resulta difícil dar ejemplos de anexiones, pues no suelen ser un término con la que el gobierno se sienta cómodo; pero algunos casos sí están claros, incluso bajo resoluciones de la ONU. Casos de anexiones son: \n* Tíbet por China en 1950. \n* Vietnam del Sur por Vietnam del Norte en 1975. \n* Kuwait por Irak en 1990. \n* República Dominicana por España en 1861. \n* Crimea por Rusia en 2014. Otros casos no tan claros lo constituyen: \n* El Sáhara Occidental por Marruecos en 1975 donde la primera no llegó a ser una nación independiente, pese a estar previsto un referéndum para tal fin. \n* Los Territorios Palestinos por Israel (Galilea), Egipto (la Franja de Gaza) y Jordania (Cisjordania) durante el transcurso de la Guerra árabe-israelí de 1948. Fue más bien un reparto, más que una anexión poco clara: Palestina no llegó a ser una nación independiente pues la Liga Árabe pospuso su independencia hasta la destrucción de Israel y su desaparición como estado independiente. La derrota árabe en la guerra citada lo impidió.

Annexation (Latin ad, to, and nexus, joining) is the political transition of land from the control of one entity to another. It is also the incorporation of unclaimed land into a state's sovereignty, which is in most cases legitimate. In international law it is the forcible transition of one state's territory by another state or the legal process by which a city acquires land. Usually, it is implied that the territory and population being annexed is the smaller, more peripheral, and weaker of the two merging entities, barring physical size. It can also imply a certain measure of coercion, expansionism or unilateralism on the part of the stronger of the merging entities. Because of this, more positive euphemisms like political union/unification or reunification are sometimes seen in discourse. Annexation differs from cession and amalgamation, because unlike cession where territory is given or sold through treaty, or amalgamation (where the authorities of both sides are asked if they agree with the merge), annexation is a unilateral act where territory is seized and held by one state and legitimized via general recognition by the other international bodies (i.e. countries and intergovernmental organisations). During World War II, the use of annexation deprived whole populations of the safeguards provided by international laws governing military occupations. The authors of the Fourth Geneva Convention made a point of "giving these rules an absolute character", thus making it much more difficult for a state to bypass international law through the use of annexation.
