El Plioceno, una división de la escala temporal geológica, es la época geológica que comienza hace 5 332 000 años y termina hace 2 588 000 años. El Plioceno sucedió al Mioceno y es anterior al Pleistoceno. Es la segunda época del periodo Neógeno. Anteriormente comprendía también el Gelasiense (finalizando hace 1 806 000 años), pero una revisión en 2009 de la Comisión Internacional de Estratigrafía ha pasado esta etapa al Pleistoceno. Al igual que con otros períodos geológicos más antiguos, las capas rocosas que definen el inicio y el fin están bien definidas, pero sus fechas exactas de inicio y fin son algo inciertas. El Plioceno fue nombrado de esta forma por Charles Lyell, y proviene de las palabras griegas pleion (más) y xeno (nuevo), y significa algo parecido a "continuación de lo reciente", refiriéndose a los mamíferos esencialmente modernos. Las fronteras del Plioceno no están establecidas como un evento mundial fácilmente identificable, sino como una serie de fronteras regionales entre el Mioceno cálido y el Plioceno más frío. La barrera superior al principio estaba ubicada al comienzo de las glaciaciones del Pleistoceno, pero actualmente se cree que dicha fecha es demasiado reciente.

The Pliocene (pronunciation: /ˈplaɪəˌsiːn/; also Pleiocene) Epoch is the epoch in the geologic timescale that extends from 5.333 million to 2.58 million years BP. It is the second and youngest epoch of the Neogene Period in the Cenozoic Era. The Pliocene follows the Miocene Epoch and is followed by the Pleistocene Epoch. Prior to the 2009 revision of the geologic time scale, which placed the four most recent major glaciations entirely within the Pleistocene, the Pliocene also included the Gelasian stage, which lasted from 2.588 to 1.806 million years ago, and is now included in the Pleistocene. As with other older geologic periods, the geological strata that define the start and end are well identified but the exact dates of the start and end of the epoch are slightly uncertain. The boundaries defining the Pliocene are not set at an easily identified worldwide event but rather at regional boundaries between the warmer Miocene and the relatively cooler Pliocene. The upper boundary was set at the start of the Pleistocene glaciations.
