En astronomía, la elongación es el ángulo entre el Sol y un planeta visto desde la Tierra. Para un planeta interior como Mercurio y Venus la elongación adquiere un valor máximo sen Emax=r donde r es la distancia del planeta interior al Sol en UA. Para un planeta exterior la elongación no tiene un valor limitado. Vale 0 en la conjunción, 90 en las cuadraturas y 180 en la oposición. Cuando un planeta inferior es visible después de la puesta del sol, está cerca de su máxima elongación oriental. Cuando un planeta inferior es visible antes del amanecer, está cerca de su máxima elongación occidental. El valor de la máxima elongación (oeste o este), para Mercurio, está entre 18° y 28° y para Venus entre 45° y 47°. Este valor varía debido a que las órbitas de los planetas son elípticas, en lugar de círculos perfectos. Otro contribuyente menor a esta inconsistencia es la inclinación orbital: la órbita de cada planeta está en un plano ligeramente diferente. Se entiende también por elongación el ángulo entre un planeta y su satélite visto desde la Tierra. Galileo estudió las cambiantes configuraciones de los satélites de Júpiter midiendo sus elongaciones.

In astronomy, a planet's elongation is the angle between the Sun and the planet, with Earth as the reference point. The greatest elongation of a given planet occurs when this inner planet’s position, in its orbital path to the Sun, is at tangent to the observer on Earth. Given the planets able to elongate are well within the area of Earth's orbit of the Sun, observation of such a phenomenon should not pose that much a challenge, compared to deep sky objects, for example. When a planet is at its greatest elongation, it is farthest from the Sun as viewed from Earth, so its view is also best at that point. When an inferior planet is visible after sunset, it is near its greatest eastern elongation. When an inferior planet is visible before sunrise, it is near its greatest western elongation. The value of the greatest elongation (west or east), for Mercury, is between 18° and 28°; and for Venus between 45° and 47°. This value varies because the orbits of the planets are elliptical, rather than perfect circles. Another minor contributor to this inconsistency is orbital inclination: each planet's orbit is in a slightly different plane.
