El hichiriki (篳篥 hichiriki?) es un pequeño oboe de doble lengüeta, de taladro cilíndrico hecho de bambú atado que cuenta con un sonido nasal e incisivo, muy penetrante, muy utilizado en Japón en la música gagaku, junto con el ryuteki, así como en todas los estilos de música y recitación poética. El hichiriki es difícil de tocar, debido en parte a su configuración de doble lengüeta. El tono y la ornamentación se controla en su mayor parte con la embocadura. El hichiriki es uno de los instrumentos "sagrados" y a menudo se oye en las bodas Shinto en Japón. Produce un sonido muy característico que se puede describir como "evocador e inquietante". El hichiriki deriva del guan chino o bili, y también está relacionado con el piri coreano. The hichiriki (篳篥) is a double reed Japanese fue (flute) used as one of two main melodic instruments in Japanese gagaku music, the other being the ryūteki. The hichiriki is difficult to play, due in part to its double reed configuration. Although a double reed instrument like the oboe, the hichiriki has a cylindrical bore and thus its sound is similar to that of a clarinet. Pitch and ornamentation (most notably bending tones) are controlled largely with the embouchure. The hichiriki is one of the "sacred" instruments and is often heard being played at Shinto weddings in Japan. Its sound is often described as haunting. The hichiriki is the most widely used of all instruments in gagaku and it is used in all forms of music aside from poetry recitation. The hichiriki is derived from the Chinese guan or bili, and is also related to the Korean piri. Notable Japanese musicians who play the hichiriki include Hideki Togi and Hitomi Nakamura. Notable non-Japanese musicians who have learned to play the hichiriki include Alan Hovhaness, Richard Teitelbaum, Thomas Piercy and Joseph Celli.
