El sufragio secreto, también denominado voto secreto es una garantía del sistema electoral que impide que un extraño pueda influir en su voto o conocerlo. Esto no supone que lo votado por el cuerpo electoral sea secreto al público, sino que tal sentido no pueda asociarse a una persona en concreto. El fin último del sufragio secreto es conseguir un voto libre e incondicionado, en el que sólo cuente la soberana voluntad del votante. El sufragio secreto tiene un valor esencial para garantizar que el voto exprese realmente la voluntad del electorado, por lo que su violación suele ser castigada como delito. Para garantizar el secreto, en las elecciones presenciales se suelen organizar recintos conocidos como cuartos oscuros que permiten la privacidad a la hora de votar, donde nadie puede observar ni controlar el voto. Al salir, dicho sobre cerrado es colocado personalmente por el votante en una urna con muchos otros sobres, de modo que luego no pueda ser identificado individualmente. En los sistemas electorales de sufragio manual, el voto secreto se garantiza utilizando sobres en los que los ciudadanos colocan la papeleta. Para que el voto sea válido, las papeletas o bien deben carecer de marca alguna, o éstas deben cumplir ciertas condiciones. Por la misma razón suele estar prohibido, bajo pena de nulidad del voto, mencionar el sentido del sufragio en voz alta, en los centros de votación.

The secret ballot is a voting method in which a voter's choices in an election or a referendum are anonymous, forestalling attempts to influence the voter by intimidation and potential vote buying. The system is one means of achieving the goal of political privacy. Secret ballots are used in conjunction with many different voting systems. The most basic form of secret ballot uses blank pieces of paper, upon which each voter writes his or her choice. Without revealing the votes to anyone, the voter would fold the ballot paper and place it in a sealed box, which is emptied later for counting. An aspect of secret voting is the provision of a voting booth to enable the voter to write on the ballot paper without others being able to see what is being written. Today, printed ballot papers are usually provided, with the names of the candidates or questions and respective checkboxes. Provisions are made at the polling place for the voters to record their preferences in secret. The ballots are designed to eliminate bias and to prevent anyone from linking voter to ballot. A problem of privacy arises with moves to improve efficiency of voting by the introduction of postal voting and electronic voting. Some countries permit proxy voting, which some argue is inconsistent with voting privacy.
