Mobile Suit Gundam (機動戦士ガンダム Kidō Senshi Gandamu?, Lit. Gundam, el Guerrero Móvil, conocida también como Primer Gundam, Gundam 0079 o simplemente Gundam '79) es una serie animada japonesa de ciencia ficción de 1979, perteneciente al genero mecha, creada y dirigida por Yoshiyuki Tomino y producida por los estudios Sunrise. La serie contó con 43 episodios y fue transmitida a través de la compañía televisora Nagoya Broadcasting Network desde su estreno el 7 de abril de 1979 hasta su final el 26 de enero de 1980. Esta fue la primera serie de Gundam en ser creada, la cual, ha sido adaptada a numerosas secuelas. La serie está ambientada en un universo ficticio conocido como Universal Century en el año 0079, y narra la historia de una guerra entre el Principado de Zeon y la Federación de la Tierra, con la posterior aparición del robot de combate RX-78-2 Gundam pilotado por el joven mecánico Amuro Ray. En 1981, la serie fue re-editada para su lanzamiento en cines y dividida en tres películas. Los personajes fueron diseñados por Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, y Kunio Okawara fue el responsable del diseño de los robots, sobre todo el del protagonista, el RX-78-2 Gundam. La primera Película fue estrenada el 22 de febrero de 1981. la serie también recibió dos adaptaciones en manga por parte de dos historietistas. En un principio la serie tuvo bajos niveles de audiencia, lo que provocó su cancelación. Sin embargo, posteriormente la serie se hizo muy popular gracias a la introducción de maquetas y figuras plásticas armables producidas por Bandai en 1980. Este hecho, unido a las retransmisiones de la serie, dio origen a una lucrativa y exitosa franquicia que se extiende a series y películas animadas, juguetes, historietas, videojuegos, ropa, etc. Mobile Suit Gundam es famosa por ser pionera del género Real Robot. La serie revolucionó el género Mecha por mostrar a los robots como instrumentos de guerra y a sus pilotos como soldados.

Mobile Suit Gundam (Japanese: 機動戦士ガンダム Hepburn: Kidō Senshi Gandamu, also known as First Gundam, Gundam 0079 or simply Gundam '79) is a televised anime series, produced and animated by Sunrise. Created and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, it premiered in Japan on Nagoya Broadcasting Network and its affiliated ANN stations on April 7, 1979, and lasted until January 26, 1980, spanning 43 episodes. It was the very first Gundam series, which has subsequently been adapted into numerous sequels and spin-offs. Set in the futuristic calendar year "Universal Century" 0079, the plot focuses on the war between the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation, with the latter unveiling a new giant robot known as the RX-78-2 Gundam piloted by the teenage civilian mechanic Amuro Ray. In 1981, the series was re-edited for theatrical release and split into three movies. The characters were designed by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, and Kunio Okawara was responsible for the mechanical designs, including the eponymous giant robot, the RX-78-2 Gundam. The first movie was released on February 22, 1981. Tomino himself also wrote a trilogy of novels that retell the events of the series. Two manga adaptations of the series have also been written by two manga artists. Despite initial low ratings that caused the series' cancellation, the popularity of Gundam saw a boost from the introduction of Bandai's Gunpla models in 1980 and from reruns and the theatrical release of the anime, leading to the creation of a prolific and lucrative media and toy franchise. The series is famous for revolutionizing the giant robot genre due to the handling of mobile suits as weapons of war as well as the portrayal of their pilots as ordinary soldiers, as opposed to the previous style of portraying hero pilots and their giant super hero robots.
