Hemisferio oriental es un término geográfico usado para referirse a la mitad de la Tierra que se encuentra al este del meridiano de Greenwich (el cual cruza el pueblo de Greenwich, Reino Unido) y al oeste de la línea internacional de cambio de fecha. También puede ser usado como una noción geográfica imprecisa para referirse a Europa, Asia, África y Oceanía, mientras que el hemisferio occidental incluiría a América. Además, puede utilizarse en un sentido cultural o geopolítico como sinónimo del "Viejo Mundo". La línea que delimita a los hemisferios oriental y occidental es una convención arbitraria, a diferencia del Ecuador (equidistante de los polos terrestres), el cual divide a los hemisferios norte y sur. El meridiano de Greenwich con longitud de 0° y la Línea internacional de cambio de fecha con longitud de alrededor de 180° son las fronteras aceptadas convencionalmente, ya que separan a las longitudes cartográficas orientales de las occidentales. Esta delimitación deja a porciones de Europa Occidental, África y Rusia oriental en el hemisferio occidental, de esta forma reduciendo su utilidad para la cartografía y para otros aspectos ya que Eurasia y África suelen ser incluidas en el hemisferio oriental. Consecuentemente, los meridianos 20° O y 160° E (su opuesto) frecuentemente son usados como fronteras alternativas, incluyendo así a los continentes europeo y africano en su totalidad pero también a una pequeña porción del noreste de Groenlandia (que por lo general es considerada como parte de América del Norte) y excluye a la mayor parte de Rusia oriental y Oceanía (por ejemplo, Nueva Zelanda). Las dos principales regiones de la Antártida reciben su nombre del hemisferio en el que se encuentran; Antártida Oriental se localiza casi en su totalidad dentro del hemisferio oriental. The Eastern Hemisphere is a geographical term for the half of the earth that is east of the prime meridian (which crosses Greenwich, England) and west of the antimeridian. It is also used to refer to Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia, in contrast with the Western Hemisphere, which includes North and South America. This hemisphere may also be called the "Oriental Hemisphere". In addition, it may be used in a cultural or geopolitical sense as a synonym for the "Old World". The line demarcating the Eastern and Western Hemispheres is an arbitrary convention, unlike the Equator (an imaginary line encircling the earth, equidistant from its poles) which divides the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The prime meridian at 0° longitude and the antimeridian, at 180° longitude are the conventionally accepted boundaries, since they divide eastern longitudes from western longitudes. This convention was established in 1884 at the International Meridian Conference held in Washington, D.C. where the standard time concepts of Canadian railroad engineer Sir Sandford Fleming were adopted. Using this demarcation puts portions of Western Europe, Africa and eastern Russia in the Western Hemisphere, thereby diluting its usefulness as a geopolitical construct, since all of Eurasia and Africa are typically included in the Eastern Hemisphere. Consequently, the meridians of 20°W and the diametrically opposed 160°E are often used, which includes all of the European and African mainlands, but also includes a small portion of northeast Greenland (typically reckoned as part of North America) and excludes more of eastern Russia and Oceania (e.g., New Zealand). Prior to the global adoption of standard time, numerous prime meridians were decreed by various countries where time was defined by local noon (thereby, local meridian). The center of the Eastern Hemisphere is located in the Indian Ocean at the intersection of the equator and the 90th meridian east, 910km west of Indonesia in the Ninety East Ridge. The land mass of the Eastern Hemisphere is larger than that of the Western Hemisphere and has a wide variety of habitats.
