El jaguar, yaguar o yaguareté (Panthera onca) es un carnívoro félido de la subfamilia de los Panterinos y género Panthera y la única de las cuatro especies actuales de este género que se encuentra en América. También es el mayor félido de América y el tercero del mundo, después del tigre (Panthera tigris) y el león (Panthera leo). Su distribución actual se extiende desde el extremo sur de Estados Unidos continuando por gran parte de América Central y Sudamérica hasta el norte y noreste de Argentina. Exceptuando algunas poblaciones en Arizona (suroeste de Tucson), esta especie ya ha sido prácticamente extirpada en los Estados Unidos desde principios de la década de 1900. Se encuentra emparentado y se asemeja mucho en apariencia física al leopardo (Panthera pardus), pero generalmente es de mayor tamaño, cuenta con una constitución más robusta y su comportamiento y hábitat son más acordes a los del tigre (Panthera tigris). Si bien prefiere las selvas densas y húmedas, puede acomodarse a una gran variedad de terrenos boscosos o abiertos. Está estrechamente asociado a la presencia de agua y destaca, junto con el tigre, por ser un félido al que le gusta nadar. Es fundamentalmente solitario. Caza tendiendo emboscadas, siendo oportunista a la hora de elegir las presas. Es una especie clave para la estabilización de los ecosistemas en los que habita; al ser un superpredador, regula las poblaciones de las especies que captura. Los ejemplares adultos tienen una mordedura excepcionalmente potente, incluso en comparación con otros grandes félidos, lo que les permite perforar los caparazones de reptiles acorazados como las tortugas y utilizar un método poco habitual para matar: ataca directamente la cabeza de la presa entre las orejas para propinar un mordisco letal que atraviesa el cráneo con sus colmillos alcanzando al cerebro. Panthera onca está calificado en la Lista Roja de la UICN como «especie casi amenazada» y su número está en declive. Entre los factores que lo amenazan se incluyen la pérdida y la fragmentación de su hábitat. A pesar de que el comercio internacional de ejemplares de esta especie o sus partes está prohibido, este félido muere con frecuencia a mano de los humanos, especialmente en conflictos con ganaderos. Aunque reducida, su distribución geográfica continúa siendo amplia. A lo largo de la historia, esta distribución le ha otorgado un lugar prominente en la mitología de numerosas culturas indígenas americanas, como los mayas y los aztecas.

The jaguar (Panthera onca) is a big cat, a feline in the Panthera genus, and is the only extant Panthera species native to the Americas. The jaguar is the third-largest feline after the tiger and the lion, and the largest in the Americas. The jaguar's present range extends from Southwestern United States and Mexico across much of Central America and south to Paraguay and northern Argentina. Apart from a known and possibly breeding population in Arizona (southeast of Tucson) and the bootheel of New Mexico, the cat has largely been extirpated from the United States since the early 20th century. This spotted cat most closely resembles the leopard physically, although it is usually larger and of sturdier build and its behavioral and habitat characteristics are closer to those of the tiger. While dense rainforest is its preferred habitat, the jaguar will range across a variety of forested and open terrains. Its preferred habitats are usually swamps and wooded regions, but jaguars also live in scrublands and deserts. The jaguar is notable, along with the tiger, as a feline that enjoys swimming. The jaguar is largely a solitary, opportunistic, stalk-and-ambush predator at the top of the food chain (an apex predator). It is a keystone species, playing an important role in stabilizing ecosystems and regulating the populations of the animals it hunts. The jaguar has an exceptionally powerful bite, even relative to the other big cats. This allows it to pierce the shells of armored reptiles and to employ an unusual killing method: it bites directly through the skull of prey between the ears to deliver a fatal bite to the brain. The jaguar is a near threatened species and its numbers are declining. Threats include loss and fragmentation of habitat. While international trade in jaguars or their parts is prohibited, the cat is still frequently killed by humans, particularly in conflicts with ranchers and farmers in South America. Although reduced, its range remains large. Given its historical distribution, the jaguar has featured prominently in the mythology of numerous indigenous American cultures, including those of the Maya and Aztec.
