Silumin is the term for a group of casting alloys based on the aluminum–silicon system and process. This group is made up of a series of lightweight, high-strength aluminum alloys containing 3 to 50 percent silicon content. Casting is the primary method of making aluminum-silicon alloys, however alternate methods can also be utilized in a rapid solidification process combined with powder metallurgy. The Aluminum Association designation system classifies silumin as corresponding to two systems of alloys: 3xxx, The first system contains the aluminum–silicon alloys also containing magnesium and/or copper, and the second classification system of alloys 4xx.x – are the Binary aluminum–silicon alloys. Silumin is highly resistance to corrosion, which makes it versatile in humid environments. The addition of silicon to aluminum when a liquid makes it less viscous. This together with its low cost as both component elements, silicon and aluminum, are relatively inexpensive to extract and make it a very good casting alloy are a more stable metal. Further, this alloy is also used on three phase motors to allow speed regulation, the manufacturing of rifle scopes and camera mounts.
