Katharévousa, kazarévusa o cazarévusa (en griego, καθαρεύουσα, [kaθa'ɾɛvusa], literalmente «lengua pura») es una variante culta y arcaizante del griego moderno. La katharévousa se concibió en el siglo XIX como un intento de «purificar» la lengua de los barbarismos que se habían ido introduciendo desde época medieval, sobre todo desde la descomposición del imperio bizantino y la dominación otomana. Su primer promotor importante fue el líder revolucionario Adamantios Korais (1748–1833). La disputa sobre si la katharévousa o la lengua popular (griego demótico o dimotikí) debía ser la lengua oficial del Estado centró la polémica cuestión lingüística griega. Ésta se resolvió legalmente en 1976, cuando la katharévousa fue sustituida como lengua oficial por la norma demótica, a la que, no obstante, influyó considerablemente.

Katharevousa (Greek: Καθαρεύουσα, pronounced [kaθaˈrevusa], literally "purifying [language]"), is a form of the Modern Greek language conceived in the early 19th century as a compromise between Ancient Greek and the Demotic Greek of the time. Originally, it was widely used both for literary and official purposes, though seldom in daily language. In the 20th century, it was increasingly adopted for official and formal purposes, until Demotic Greek became the official language of Greece in 1976 and Andreas Papandreou abolished the polytonic system of writing both Demotic and Katharevousa in 1982. Katharevousa was conceived by the intellectual and revolutionary leader Adamantios Korais. A graduate of the University of Montpellier, Korais spent most of his life as an expatriate in Paris. Being a classical scholar, he was repelled by the Byzantine and later influence on Greek society and was a fierce critic of the clergy and their alleged subservience to the Ottoman Empire. He held that education was a prerequisite to Greek liberation. Part of its purpose was to mediate the struggle between the "archaists" favouring full reversion to archaic forms, and the "modernists".
