Un abismo es una profundidad sin fondo y, por extensión, cualquier lugar profundo. La palabra suele usarse para aludir a un pozo, ya sea el fondo más profundo del océano o el infierno. Procede del griego αβυσσος, ‘sin fondo’, forma que puede provenir del sumerio Abzu (en acadio Apsu), ‘aguas profundas’. Según la obra Greek and English Lexicon to the New Testament (Londres, 1845, pág. 2), el término griego αβυσσος (á·bys·sos) significa “muy o sumamente profundo”. Para el Greek-English Lexicon (de Liddell y Scott, Oxford, 1968, pág. 4), el significado es “insondable, ilimitado”. La Septuaginta griega lo utiliza por lo general para traducir la palabra hebrea tehóhm (profundidad acuosa), como en Génesis 1:2; 7:11. De la idea general de profundidad, el término adquirió el significado de ‘lugar de los muertos’, si bien aparentemente nunca llegó a ser lo mismo que el She'ol. Según la Biblia cristiana, es la prisión de los espíritus malvados de donde ocasionalmente salen para causar maldad, y donde Satanás está condenado a habitar.. Bajo el altar del templo de Jerusalén se creía que había un pasaje que llevaba al abismo del mundo, donde descansaba una piedra fundacional de la tierra. En la cosmografía rabínica el abismo es una región de Gehena situada bajo el lecho del océano y dividida en tres o siete partes superpuestas una sobre otra. En la Cábala el abismo, como abertura hacia el inframundo, es la morada de espíritus malvados y se corresponde con la abertura del abismo hacia el mundo superior. En general el abismo se considera vagamente como un lugar de extensión indefinida, morada de misterio y dolor.

In religion, an abyss is a bottomless pit, or also a chasm that may lead to the underworld or hell. In the Septuagint, or Greek version of the Hebrew Bible, the word represents both the original unfinished creation (Genesis 1:2) and the Hebrew tehom ("a surging water-deep"), which is used also in apocalyptic and kabbalistic literature and in the New Testament for hell; the place of punishment; in the Revised version of the Bible "abyss" is generally used for this idea. Primarily in the Septuagint cosmography the word is applied both to the waters under the earth which originally covered it, and from which the springs and rivers are supplied and to the waters of the firmament which were regarded as closely connected with those below. In the Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus there is an abyss between the righteous dead and the wicked dead in Sheol. In the Book of Revelation, Abaddon is called "the angel of the abyss".
