The retention by adults of traits previously seen only in the young is a subject studied in the field of developmental biology, occurring in two ways. In neoteny (/niːˈɒtᵻni/ /niːˈɒtni/ or /niːˈɒtəni/, also called juvenilization), the physiological (or somatic) development of an organism (typically an animal) is slowed or delayed. Neoteny is found in modern humans. In contrast, in progenesis (or pedogenesis, paedogenesis), sexual development occurs faster. Both processes result in paedomorphism (or paedomorphosis), a type of heterochrony. Some authors define paedomorphism as the retention of larval traits, as seen in salamanders. Neoteny is one of three dimensions of heterochrony, the change in timing of developmental events. These are the relative speed of development, involving acceleration vs. neoteny; the relative amount of development, hypermorphosis meaning further vs. progenesis meaning not as far; and the timing of development, with predisplacement for starting earlier vs. postdisplacement for starting later.
