Shirabe vs jpdb

jpdb is built by people who clearly take this seriously. Its per-title vocabulary decks, frequency data and coverage statistics are the most thorough in the space, and if you want to know exactly which words appear in a specific anime before you watch it, jpdb is the tool that answers.

We use it. This page is not a takedown. It’s about two specific gaps: how much configuration stands between you and studying, and what happens if English isn’t your first language.

Power that arrives as homework

jpdb is deep, and its depth is exposed directly to you. Card formats, review types, timing behaviour, deck construction, what counts as known, how new cards enter: a lot of it is a decision you have to make before the system behaves the way you want.

For a certain kind of learner that’s the appeal, and we understand it. But defaults are a feature. Most people don’t want to develop an opinion about their scheduler before they can study; they want to look up a word and have the card be good.

Shirabe’s answer is fewer knobs, better defaults. FSRS is on and self-optimising against your history. Cards come out of the dictionary with reading, pitch accent, audio and an example sentence already attached. There’s a settings page, and most people never open it.

That is a real trade, not a free win. If you like tuning, you’ll find our ceiling lower on purpose.

Spanish, at the dictionary level

jpdb is English-only, and for most of its users that’s fine.

If your first language is Spanish, every lookup runs through a second translation step in your head. Shirabe’s dictionary is multilingual at the entry level: Spanish definitions are real content, not a machine pass over English glosses. For a Spanish-speaking learner it’s the difference between reading a definition and decoding one.

This is the one thing on this page jpdb can’t answer with a settings change.

The dictionary is the front door

jpdb’s dictionary exists to serve the study system. Shirabe’s study system grew out of the dictionary.

That sounds like a distinction without a difference until you look at how you actually use it. Shirabe’s dictionary is free, public, needs no account, and is good enough to be your everyday lookup tool: kanji, radicals, readings, examples, pitch accent, audio. The studying is what happens when a lookup is worth keeping. You can use us as a dictionary for a month and never pay anything, then start saving words when it feels worth it.

Where jpdb is genuinely ahead

Media coverage. jpdb’s per-title database is bigger and more mature than ours. Thousands of anime, manga, novels, visual novels and games with vocabulary lists and coverage percentages. We have media coverage, and it is not at that scale today.

Frequency data. jpdb’s frequency lists are excellent and widely used as a reference by people who don’t even use it to study.

Price. jpdb is free.

If pre-watch coverage analysis across a huge title database is the job, jpdb does it better. That’s worth saying plainly.

Grammar: neither of us

Shirabe’s grammar layer is planned, not shipped. jpdb doesn’t teach grammar either. If grammar is what you’re looking for, pair either of us with Bunpro, Renshuu or MaruMori.

Who should stay on jpdb

• You want the deepest per-title coverage database available.
• You enjoy configuring your study system and have opinions about card types.
• You want it free.
• You read English comfortably and gain nothing from Spanish support.
• Its frequency data is central to how you choose what to study.

Who Shirabe is for

• You want the same FSRS rigor without a configuration session first.
• Spanish is your first language and you’re tired of the double hop.
• You want one polished product (dictionary, cards, reviews, progress) rather than a set of capable parts.
• You have Anki decks to bring, with scheduling and history intact.
• You want a dictionary you’d happily use even on days you don’t study.

The honest summary

jpdb optimises for depth and control. Shirabe optimises for a short loop and good defaults, and adds a Spanish-first dictionary nobody else in this bracket has.
